📍 Abovyan is in Kotayk Province, about 10 km north-east of central Yerevan on the highway towards Charentsavan, Hrazdan and Lake Sevan.
Why Rent a Car in Abovyan
Abovyan is a modern commuter town named after the 19th-century writer Khachatur Abovyan, and a place to stay rather than a sightseeing stop. Its value is its position: it sits on the road that carries most traffic between Yerevan and the north-east, and it lies close to the turn for Garni and Geghard. If you plan a few days around Kotayk and Sevan, starting here saves the morning crawl through the capital.
A car is the sensible way to use this location. Public transport runs to Yerevan and some larger villages, but not to the monasteries, gorges and forests around. If you are going only to the centre of Yerevan, you do not need a car at all.
Day Trips from Abovyan by Car
How Far Is Everything?
From Abovyan: central Yerevan 10–15 km (20–40 min in traffic), Zvartnots Airport (EVN) roughly 30–35 km (about 40–60 min), Garni 25–30 km (40 min), Tsaghkadzor about 45 km (45–60 min), Lake Sevan about 55 km (about an hour). From Yerevan itself: Tsaghkadzor about 55 km and Sevan about 65 km, so Abovyan saves you the first part of the route.
Pick-Up Logic: Airport, Yerevan or Delivery to Abovyan
We do not claim a specific rental office in Abovyan. The practical options are these:
- Collect at Zvartnots Airport (EVN) and drive to Abovyan — the widest choice, usually 40–60 min depending on the traffic through Yerevan
- Type Abovyan into "Specify location" to see whether a provider offers delivery to your hotel or apartment for your dates
- Collect in Yerevan if your first days are in the city, and return it to the same place; one-way returns in other cities are possible with some providers for a fee
- If you land at night, give the provider your flight number and confirm any out-of-hours fee
Driving in Kotayk: Roads, Winter and Fuel
The main Yerevan–Abovyan–Sevan highway (M4) is a good, busy road with trucks and local drivers who overtake fast. Traffic jams form near the entrances to Yerevan on weekday mornings and evenings and on Fridays and Sundays at the start and end of weekends, when residents go to Sevan and Tsaghkadzor.
- Winter: the higher parts of Kotayk, including Tsaghkadzor and the road to Sevan, get snow and fog from about late November; carry winter tyres or an all-wheel-drive car
- Fuel: stations are frequent on the M4 and in Abovyan; fill up before the gorge roads and mountain villages
- Garni and Geghard: the road is paved but has bends and parking is tight at weekends; go early
- Unpaved roads: forest tracks and some village roads are gravel, and rental insurance is not valid on unpaved roads
- Speed: 60 km/h in towns and 90 km/h outside, with cameras on the main roads
- Parking: informal and mostly free in Abovyan; do not leave valuables visible
Which Car to Rent for Kotayk
A compact automatic sedan is enough for Abovyan, Garni, Sevan and Tsaghkadzor in summer. Choose a crossover or all-wheel drive if you plan to visit in winter, climb to higher viewpoints, or want clearance for potholes. In our October 2026 check, crossovers in Yerevan started at about $47 per day. For other pick-up places, check the search for your dates.
How Much Does Car Hire in Abovyan Cost?
Availability and prices vary by city and season and are usually in the same range as Yerevan, where compact automatic sedans started at about $33 per day and full coverage added roughly $8–$9 per day (October 2026). Cars for Abovyan are fewer than in the capital, and picking up in Yerevan or at the airport often gives the widest choice. Compare the total with full coverage, use the "No deposit" and "No credit card" filters, and check the cancellation deadline.
Insurance and Deposit in Abovyan
Basic insurance leaves an excess of several hundred dollars and normally means a deposit. Full coverage brings the excess close to zero and with many local agencies means no deposit. It typically does not cover tyres, glass, the underbody, interior or lost keys, and it is not valid on unpaved roads. Photograph the car with the manager at pick-up and return.
