Why Rent a Car in Yerevan
Yerevan is a walkable city of pink-tuff buildings, cafés and the Cascade complex, and the sights in the centre — Republic Square, the Opera, the Vernissage market, the Matenadaran — are best seen on foot or by taxi. A rental car pays off when you leave town. Within an hour you can be at the Greco-Roman temple of Garni, the monastery of Geghard carved into a cliff, or the pilgrimage site of Khor Virap with Mount Ararat behind it. A day gets you to Lake Sevan and Dilijan, or to the red cliffs of Noravank and the vineyards of Areni.
Our advice: do not pay for a car on the days you only walk the city. Book it from the day you leave, collect it at the airport on arrival if you are going straight out of town, or ask the provider to deliver it to your hotel when you set off.

Zvartnots Airport Car Rental (EVN): Where to Pick Up
Zvartnots International Airport (EVN) sits about 12 km from the city and is the best pick-up point: the widest choice of cars and a quick exit towards both the city and the highways. Local agencies usually meet you in the arrivals hall or in the car park and hand over the car there; check your voucher for the manager's phone number and the exact meeting point. Many flights land at night, so give the provider your flight number and confirm any out-of-hours fee.
Yerevan Central Station is the second popular pick-up point. Many providers also deliver cars across the city to hotels and apartments — choose it with the "Specify location" option in the search.
Documents and age. Bring your driving licence (usually held for at least a year), passport and the booking voucher. An International Driving Permit is recommended and required by some providers; drivers from CIS countries usually rent with their national licence — confirm with the agency. Minimum age is typically 21.
How Much Does Car Hire in Yerevan Cost? Prices (2026)
Yerevan is the biggest rental market in Armenia, with hundreds of cars listed, so prices are the lowest in the country. In our check for 8–22 October 2026 (14-day rental, about 220 cars listed), the cheapest cars were compact automatic sedans:
| Car class | From per day | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Compact sedan (Nissan Sentra, Kia Cerato) | $33–$40 | City, highways, Sevan and Dilijan |
| Mid-size sedan (Hyundai Elantra, Kia Optima) | $37–$40 | Comfort on longer drives |
| Crossover / SUV (Nissan Kicks, Rogue Sport, Jeep Compass) | $47–$62 | Mountain roads, Goris, Tatev |
| Full coverage add-on | +$8–$9 | Close to zero excess, often no deposit |
Prices vary with the season and the rental length; summer and ski weeks are higher and weekly rentals are cheaper per day. When you compare, look at the total with full coverage, not the base rate alone.
Driving in Yerevan: Traffic, Parking and Rules
Traffic in the centre is busy and some drivers change lanes or turn without signalling, so keep your distance and stay calm. Speed cameras are common. Outside rush hours, getting out of the city towards the highways is easy.
Parking
Paid parking zones in central Yerevan are marked on the street and can be paid by app or machine; outside the centre parking is usually free. Choose a hotel with parking, and do not leave valuables in the car.
Rules to Remember
- Speed limits: 60 km/h in town, 90 km/h outside it unless signed otherwise
- Seatbelts compulsory; no handheld phone
- Zero tolerance for drink-driving
- If stopped by the police, stay polite and never offer cash — it can be treated as a bribe
- Keep to paved roads: insurance does not cover unpaved routes
Yerevan Car Rental Insurance & Deposit Explained
With basic insurance the excess (your share of any damage) can be several hundred dollars and the provider blocks a deposit. Full coverage brings the excess close to zero and, with many local agencies, means no deposit — for roughly $8–$9 more per day in our October check. It typically does not cover tyres, glass, the underbody, interior or lost keys, and it is not valid on unpaved roads. Photograph the car with the manager at pick-up and return, and make sure all damage is written in the acceptance document. Our full Armenia guide explains deposits and insurance in detail.
