📍 Vagharshapat is in Armavir Province, about 20 km west of Yerevan on the highway towards Armavir and Gyumri, a few km beyond Zvartnots Airport (EVN).
Why Rent a Car in Vagharshapat
Vagharshapat is the spiritual centre of the Armenian Church and its main sights are UNESCO World Heritage: the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, the churches of St Hripsime and St Gayane, and the ruins of Zvartnots Cathedral on the way from Yerevan. The first three are within a short walk or taxi ride of each other, so renting a car just for them is not needed. Many visitors see them in half a day and return to Yerevan.
The car pays off when you add the surroundings. Because Vagharshapat is on the flat Ararat plain and next to the main Yerevan–Gyumri road, it is a good start for a day in the west and north of the country, and it puts you ahead of the Yerevan traffic when you leave in the morning.
What You Can See Without Leaving Town
Pick-Up Logic: Zvartnots Airport First
We do not claim a specific rental office in Vagharshapat. The airport is only a short drive away, so the simplest plan is:
- Arrive at Zvartnots Airport (EVN) and collect the car there — widest choice and a quick drive of about 15–30 minutes to Vagharshapat
- Check local delivery to your hotel in Vagharshapat with the "Specify location" option in the search
- If you stay in Vagharshapat for one night only, deliver and return the car in Yerevan to avoid extra fees
- Give the provider your flight number if you land at night, and confirm any out-of-hours fee
Documents and age. Bring your driving licence (usually held for at least a year), passport and the booking voucher. An International Driving Permit is recommended and required by some providers. Minimum age is typically 21.

Driving Around Vagharshapat: Roads and Rules
The roads on the Ararat plain are flat and good, so this is one of the easiest places to drive in Armenia. The main roads near Vagharshapat are busy at the start and end of the day, with trucks and local drivers who overtake fast.
- Parking: easy near the churches; there are small paid or informal car parks. On Sundays and feast days the cathedral area fills up with pilgrims
- Dress: shoulders and knees should be covered inside churches; women are often asked to cover their head
- Heat: summers are hot on the plain, so do not leave the car in the sun; winters can be cold but the plain rarely gets deep snow
- Aragats and Amberd: the road climbs to about 2,300 m and can be snowy or closed from autumn to spring; ask locally
- Unpaved roads: some access roads to villages and viewpoints are gravel, and rental insurance is not valid on unpaved roads
- Speed: 60 km/h in towns and 90 km/h outside, with speed cameras on the main roads

How Much Does Car Hire in Vagharshapat Cost?
Availability and prices vary by city and season and are usually in the same range as Yerevan, where compact automatic sedans started at about $33 per day and full coverage added roughly $8–$9 per day (October 2026). Because Vagharshapat is so close to the capital, the cheapest and widest choice is usually a Yerevan or airport pick-up. Compare the total with full coverage, use the "No deposit" and "No credit card" filters, and pay attention to the cancellation deadline.
Insurance and Deposit Near Vagharshapat
Basic insurance leaves an excess of several hundred dollars and normally means a deposit. Full coverage brings the excess close to zero and with many local agencies means no deposit. It typically does not cover tyres, glass, the underbody, interior or lost keys, and it is not valid on unpaved roads. Photograph the car with the manager at pick-up and return.
