📍 Gyumri is in Shirak Province, about 120 km north-west of Yerevan on the M1 highway, at roughly 1,500 m above sea level.
Do I Need a Car in Gyumri?
Not for the centre. The historic Kumayri quarter, Vartanants Square, the Holy Saviour Church (Amenaprkich), the Black Fortress (Sev Berd) and the museums are close enough to walk, and a taxi across town is cheap. A car makes sense when you want to see the rest of the north-west on your own schedule, because shared minibuses (marshrutkas) run between towns but not to the monasteries and villages in between.
Many travellers do Gyumri as part of a loop: Yerevan, then Gyumri, then Vanadzor or Dilijan, then back towards Lake Sevan. A one-way plan like that is where a rental car saves the most time. If you are in Gyumri for a single night, take a bus or taxi from Yerevan and rent only for the days you drive out.
Pick-Up Logic: Yerevan First, Gyumri Second
We do not claim a specific rental office in the city. The practical options are these:
- Collect at Zvartnots Airport (EVN) or in Yerevan, then drive to Gyumri — widest choice of cars, and the M1 highway is a straightforward 1.5–2 hour drive
- Local delivery or pick-up in Gyumri — type Gyumri into "Specify location" and see what the providers offer for your dates; the list is shorter than in Yerevan
- Different return city — some providers allow a drop-off in another city, usually for a fee; check this on the car card before booking
- Gyumri's small Shirak Airport (LWN) has limited flights; do not assume cars are collected there
Day Trips from Gyumri by Car
How Far Is Everything?
From Gyumri: Yerevan about 120 km (1.5–2 hrs), Vanadzor about 70 km, Dilijan roughly 2 hrs via Vanadzor, Sanahin and Haghpat 2–2.5 hrs. From Yerevan, Gyumri is a long day trip, but most people prefer to stay at least one night. The Georgian border post at Bavra is in the north of the province, but rental cars normally cannot cross; ask the provider first.
Ani is across the border. The famous medieval city of Ani is in Turkey and the border is closed; you cannot drive there from Gyumri. Some viewpoints on the Armenian side look across the Akhurian river — ask locally if you want one.
Driving in Gyumri: Roads, Winter and Fuel
The M1 highway from Yerevan is a good main road, with sections of lighter traffic, trucks and the usual potholes. Gyumri's streets are wide in places and narrow in the old quarter, with some cobbled stretches and low tuff buildings. The 1988 earthquake damaged much of the city, and you will still pass restored blocks beside empty plots.
- Winter: Gyumri is cold and often windy, with snow and ice from about late November to March; ask for winter tyres or all-wheel drive and expect slower driving on the passes towards Vanadzor
- Fuel: stations are frequent on the M1 and in Gyumri; fill up before any rural route to the north-west, where they are rarer
- Parking: informal and mostly free around the old centre; leave nothing visible in the car
- Unpaved roads: some roads to villages and Lake Arpi are rough or gravel, and rental insurance is not valid on unpaved roads
- Speed: 60 km/h in towns and 90 km/h outside, with speed cameras on the main roads; keep to paved roads
Which Car to Rent for Gyumri
For the M1, Gyumri and the tuff villages nearby, a compact automatic sedan is enough and the cheapest. Choose a crossover or all-wheel drive if you travel in winter, plan the mountain road to Lake Arpi or the Lori province, or simply want more ground clearance for potholes. In our October 2026 check, crossovers in Yerevan started at about $47 per day; for Gyumri, check the search for your dates.
How Much Does Car Hire in Gyumri Cost?
Availability and prices vary by city and season, and for Gyumri they are usually in the same range as Yerevan, where compact automatic sedans started at about $33 per day and full coverage added roughly $8–$9 per day (October 2026). Fewer cars are listed for Gyumri than for Yerevan, so a car can cost more for short notice or peak dates. Compare the total with full coverage, use the "No deposit" and "No credit card" filters, and look at both Gyumri and Yerevan pick-up before you decide.
Insurance and Deposit in Gyumri
Basic insurance leaves an excess of several hundred dollars and usually means a deposit. Full coverage brings the excess close to zero and, with many local agencies, means no deposit. It typically does not cover tyres, glass, the underbody, interior or lost keys, and it is not valid on unpaved roads. Photograph the car with the manager at pick-up and return.
