📍 Tsaghkadzor lies in the Kotayk province hills, reached from the Yerevan–Sevan highway by the turn-off at Hrazdan — about 55 km (roughly 1 hr) from Yerevan and about 60 km from Zvartnots Airport (EVN).
Do You Need a Car in Tsaghkadzor?
In ski season many guests arrive on a hotel transfer and stay close to the lifts, and for that a car is optional. It becomes useful when you want to get out of the resort: dinner in town, Kecharis Monastery, the lake, Dilijan, or a flexible arrival and departure that does not depend on a transfer slot. In summer, when the resort is quieter, a car is the easiest way to combine hiking and cable-car rides with a drive round Lake Sevan.
Getting to Tsaghkadzor: Pick-Up and the Drive
The usual plan is to collect the car at Zvartnots Airport (EVN) or at your hotel in Yerevan and drive up. From the capital the route follows the main highway north-east through Abovyan towards Hrazdan, then turns off to climb the last stretch to the resort; allow about an hour in good conditions and more on a Friday evening or Sunday afternoon of a ski weekend. Some providers deliver to other towns; check the pick-up and delivery options in the search and use "Specify location" to see what is offered for Tsaghkadzor, and confirm the fee.
After a late flight in winter, an overnight in Yerevan is often wiser than a night climb on a mountain road.

Winter Driving in Tsaghkadzor: Tyres, Chains and Snow
The last section to the resort is paved but climbs with bends, and it can have snow and ice from late autumn into spring. In the coldest weeks, local advice is to have winter tyres or snow chains. Standard rental cars are not always equipped with them, so ask the provider before booking, in writing, whether winter tyres or chains are fitted or available, and whether there is a fee. A crossover or all-wheel-drive car gives more confidence on the hill, but it does not replace winter tyres.
- Check the weather and road status on the morning you drive; snow can arrive quickly at this altitude
- Fill the tank in Yerevan or Hrazdan and keep it more than half full
- Allow extra time on ski weekends, when cars queue near the base area
- Insurance is not valid on unpaved roads; stay on the paved road to the hotels and lifts
- Park only where it is allowed; do not block the access road for snow ploughs
Things to Do Around Tsaghkadzor by Car
A half-day to Sevan plus Kecharis is a good plan for a non-ski day; allow a full day for Dilijan. On the way back you can detour to Garni and Geghard (about 80 km via Abovyan).

Which Car to Rent for Tsaghkadzor
In summer and early autumn a compact automatic sedan is sufficient and the cheapest option. For the ski season a crossover or SUV with winter tyres is the sensible choice, with room for ski bags in the boot (check the luggage space on the car card; skis can be carried inside a larger car with the seats folded). Full coverage typically adds a few dollars per day (about $8–$9 in the Yerevan listing) and with many local agencies removes the deposit, which is worth having on a winter road with a risk of minor scrapes.
Winter weeks are the tightest for cars: book early with free cancellation, and compare the total with full coverage and any winter-equipment fee.
