VRENTY CAR is an independent comparison service. The search above is provided by our partner Localrent and lists local agencies side by side; you book directly with the provider. Always confirm the price, insurance and deposit before you pay.
📍 Sevan lies on the north-western shore of Lake Sevan, on the main highway from Yerevan towards Dilijan and Ijevan — about 65 km (roughly 1 hr) from Yerevan and about 70 km from Zvartnots Airport (EVN).
Do You Need a Car in Sevan?
Sevan itself is small. The lake, the Sevanavank peninsula and the beaches are all within a few kilometres, so a short visit can be done by taxi or a marshrutka from Yerevan. A car makes sense when you want more than the standard photo stop: the quieter southern shore, the monasteries away from the tour buses, a swim at a beach of your choice, or a continuation to Dilijan without going back through Yerevan.
If your plan is only Yerevan plus one lake day, it is usually cheaper to rent from the capital for that day and drive up.
Where to Pick Up a Rental Car for Sevan
Most visitors collect the car at Zvartnots Airport (EVN) or in Yerevan and drive to the lake, which gives the widest choice of cars. Some providers also deliver to other towns, including Sevan. Whether this is offered, and at what fee, depends on the provider and the dates, so check the pick-up and delivery options in the search and choose the "Specify location" option to see what is offered for Sevan. Confirm the meeting point and the delivery fee in your voucher.
If the car is delivered to Sevan, give the provider your arrival time and exact address. For the return, plan about an hour to Yerevan, longer on a summer Sunday evening.

Best Road Trips from Sevan by Car
Driving Around the Lake
The shore road around Lake Sevan makes a full-day loop with stops at beaches, villages and monasteries; start early and keep a tank in reserve, because filling stations are further apart on the far side. Parts of the eastern and south-eastern shore are close to the Azerbaijani border, which is closed; stay on the main road, and check your own foreign-ministry advice before you go. If you would rather not drive a full circuit, do one shore as a half-day out-and-back.

Which Car to Rent for Lake Sevan
For summer and autumn trips on the main roads a compact automatic sedan is enough and usually the cheapest choice. A crossover is more comfortable on the bumpier secondary roads round the lake and the right pick if you carry a family and luggage. For winter, when the highway between Yerevan, Sevan and Dilijan can be icy and foggy, ask the provider about winter tyres or all-wheel drive; the summit sections are above 2,000 m. Full coverage adds only a few dollars per day (about $8–$9 in the Yerevan listing) and with many local agencies removes the deposit.
Local Driving Notes for Sevan
- The Yerevan–Sevan highway is busy on summer weekends; Sunday evenings are slow on the way back to the capital
- Speed cameras are common; limits are 60 km/h in towns and 90 km/h outside unless signed otherwise
- Fog, ice and strong lake wind are possible on the Sevan Pass and the Dilijan road from late autumn to spring
- Fill up in Sevan or Yerevan before heading round the lake or into the mountains
- Roadside stalls sell dried fruit, fish and honey; pull off fully before you stop, as cars stop without warning
- Do not drive onto dirt tracks to reach a beach: insurance is not valid on unpaved roads
Best Time to Visit Lake Sevan
At 1,900 m the lake has a cooler climate than Yerevan. June to mid-September is the swimming season, with water that is pleasant rather than warm, and the busiest period for the beaches and the highway. Late spring and early autumn bring clear light, fewer people and good prices. Winters are cold and windy with snow on the surrounding hills; the roads are normally cleared, but the monasteries look their best on clear days and you should keep a margin for weather.
Lakeside restaurants serve whitefish and crayfish. Skip ishkhan (Sevan trout), an endangered species.
