📍 Goris, Syunik Province: on the M2 highway between Yerevan and the Iranian border, about 250 km south-east of the capital and roughly 70 km north of Kapan.
Goris: A Small Town With a Big Backyard
Goris sits at about 1,400 m in a valley of volcanic rock pillars, with old stone houses from the 19th century climbing the slope. The town needs half a day: the quiet centre, the rock "chimneys" and cave dwellings of the old quarter, a long local lunch. Travellers stay two nights for what lies within an hour's drive — Tatev, the swinging bridge at Khndzoresk, Bronze Age stones near Sisian and the country beyond Kapan.
A car matters more here than in almost any other Armenian town. Shared minibuses run between Yerevan, Goris and Kapan, but there is little regular transport to the villages and viewpoints. With your own car you can reach Tatev early, avoid the tour-bus hours and be back in town for sunset.
Day Trips from Goris by Car
Tatev: Cable Car or Drive Up?
The Wings of Tatev aerial tramway is about 5.7 km long and the ride takes around 12 minutes each way, crossing the Vorotan gorge to the monastery. The lower station is at Halidzor, on the M2 between Goris and Kapan. You can also drive to the monastery by a winding road through the village of Tatev; both are good, and many visitors do one each way. The cable car normally closes for maintenance in late autumn and can pause in strong wind, so check the current dates before you plan a trip around it.
Allow 2–3 hours at Tatev itself. Side tracks around Tatev are often unpaved: your insurance is not valid there, so ask locally before leaving the paved road.
From Yerevan to Goris by Car: Route, Passes and Stops
The usual route is the M2: Yerevan, the Ararat valley (Artashat and Khor Virap), Areni and Yeghegnadzor in Vayots Dzor, over the Vorotan Pass (above 2,300 m) and down to Sisian, then on to Goris. It is about 250 km and, with stops, a full day. Most visitors break it with Khor Virap, Noravank and Areni.
- Fuel: fill up in Yeghegnadzor or Sisian; stations thin out in the high country
- Passes: Vorotan Pass can have snow or fog from October to April; check the forecast and carry warm clothes
- Daylight: try to reach Goris before dark; the mountain stretches are poorly lit and have unmarked bends
- Road surface: the main M2 is paved, with patches of potholes and some roadworks; the Goris–Kapan section was improved in recent years
Where to Pick Up a Car for Goris
For most trips there are two practical options. You can collect the car at Zvartnots Airport (EVN) or in Yerevan and drive south over a day with stops — this gives the widest choice of cars, including automatic crossovers. Or you can check whether a local provider offers pick-up or delivery in Goris. We cannot promise a specific office or stock in the town: open the search above, type Goris with the "Specify location" option and compare what is listed for your dates. If you collect in Yerevan and plan to leave the car in the south, ask about a different return location and any fee.
Documents. Bring your driving licence (usually held for at least a year), passport and booking voucher. An International Driving Permit is recommended and required by some providers; minimum age is typically 21.
Which Car, What Price, What Insurance?
Prices and availability differ by city and season. In our October 2026 check in Yerevan, compact automatic sedans started at about $33 per day, crossovers at about $47 per day, and full coverage added roughly $8–$9 per day. Goris is usually in the same range, but the choice is smaller, so book early for summer and for autumn weekends. Longer rentals lower the daily rate.
A crossover is the sensible default for Tatev and the village roads; a compact sedan is enough for the M2 only. Compare the total with full coverage, not just the base rate, and use the "No deposit" and "No credit card" filters if you want to avoid a card block.
Insurance and Deposit
With basic insurance the excess can be several hundred dollars and a deposit is blocked. Full coverage brings the excess close to zero and, with many local agencies, means no deposit. It typically excludes tyres, glass, the underbody and damage on unpaved roads — all relevant in Syunik. Photograph the car at pick-up and return. See the full Armenia guide for details.
Driving in Syunik: Road and Season Notes
- Speed limits: 60 km/h in town, 90 km/h outside it unless signed otherwise; cameras exist on main roads
- Winter (November–March): snow and ice on the passes; roads are usually cleared but chains or winter tyres are wise
- Best season: late May to October for mountain roads; autumn colours in Syunik are excellent
- Keep to paved roads: insurance is not valid on unpaved roads, and navigation apps sometimes suggest dirt shortcuts
The borders with Turkey and Azerbaijan are closed, and several governments advise caution in some border districts of Syunik and Tavush. Check your own foreign-ministry advice, stick to the main roads and do not drive towards border zones.
