📍 Vanadzor, Lori Province: Armenia's third-largest city, at about 1,350 m in the Pambak valley, roughly 128 km north of Yerevan and about 64 km east of Gyumri.
Vanadzor as a Base for Northern Armenia
Vanadzor is an industrial city built mostly in the Soviet period (it was called Kirovakan until 1992), and it is not the main attraction. What it offers is position: it is the crossroads between Yerevan, Gyumri, Dilijan and the Debed canyon road to Georgia, so from here you can reach a remarkable group of medieval monasteries and fortresses in a day, without the long return to Yerevan. Staying in Vanadzor also splits the long journey between the capital and the north.
Most visitors use the city for a night and a car for the surroundings: public transport to the villages is limited and the sights further north are far apart.
Getting from Yerevan to Vanadzor by Car
The most direct road leaves Yerevan towards Ashtarak and Aparan, then climbs over a high pass to reach Spitak, from where it follows the Pambak valley to Vanadzor — about 128 km, around 2 hours in good conditions. At the Spitak junction the road to Gyumri splits off (the junction to Gyumri is about 45 km, to Vanadzor about 19 km). The pass is above 2,000 m and often foggy, snowy or icy from November to March; check the weather and consider waiting if snow is falling.
Other Routes
From Gyumri the drive is about 64 km (roughly an hour). From Dilijan the road crosses the Pushkin Pass (about 2,100 m), a scenic mountain route of roughly 40–60 km which can be foggy or icy in winter; our Dilijan car rental guide has the details. These two roads make a circle through northern Armenia possible: Yerevan, Dilijan, Vanadzor, Gyumri and back.
Where to Pick Up Your Car
For the best choice and prices collect it at Zvartnots Airport (EVN) or in Yerevan and drive north, or ask for delivery to a hotel in the capital on the day you leave. If you reach Vanadzor by train, shared minibus or taxi and want to rent locally, open the search, choose "Specify location" and see what pick-up and delivery options appear for your dates; local supply is smaller than in Yerevan, so book as early as you can and read the voucher for the manager's contact and exact handover place. We do not list a specific office in Vanadzor.

Which Car for Lori and the Debed Canyon
On the main roads, a compact automatic sedan is enough from late spring to early autumn. Take a crossover if you plan many village stops, since steep ramps and ageing asphalt are common above the canyon, or if you travel between November and March. In winter Vanadzor is genuinely cold, and ice, snow and fog on the Aparan–Spitak and Pushkin passes are normal: request winter tyres or all-wheel drive, check the road before you start and keep a full tank.
Driving Notes for Lori Province
- The Debed canyon road carries trucks to and from the Georgian border; overtake only on clear straights and expect slower traffic
- Fog and low cloud are frequent on the high passes, even in summer; slow down and use dipped headlights
- Fuel: fill up in Vanadzor, Alaverdi or Stepanavan; stations are rarer in the villages and on the plateau
- The border with Georgia is open at Bagratashen on the canyon road, but rental cars normally cannot cross without written permission and a fee
Borders and Safety Advice
The borders of Armenia with Turkey and Azerbaijan are closed, and several governments advise caution in some border districts of the country. The sights around Vanadzor and in the Debed canyon are in a different region, but check your own foreign-ministry advice before travelling and stay on main roads.
Insurance and Deposit for Vanadzor
With basic insurance the excess can be several hundred dollars and a deposit is blocked. Full coverage brings the excess close to zero and, with many local agencies, means no deposit; in our October 2026 Yerevan check it added roughly $8–$9 per day. Use the No deposit and No credit card filters to see which cars accept a debit card or cash. Full coverage typically excludes tyres, glass, the underbody, interior and lost keys, and is not valid on unpaved roads — important here, where many village and trail approaches are gravel.
