📍 Jermuk, Vayots Dzor Province: a high-altitude spa town reached from the M2 highway near Vayk, about 170 km south-east of Yerevan and roughly 50 km from Yeghegnadzor.
Why Drive to Jermuk
Jermuk is a Soviet-era spa resort in a forested gorge, with warm mineral springs, sanatoriums, a small cable car and a famous mineral-water gallery. It is a place for slow days — a spa treatment, a walk to the waterfall, a bottle of local mineral water — rather than a checklist of sights, which makes the journey itself the best part. The road passes some of Armenia's most photogenic places: Khor Virap with Ararat, the Areni vineyards, the red cliffs of Noravank, and the Arpa river gorge.
The Drive From Yerevan: Stops and Timing
The usual route runs along the M2 through the Ararat valley (Artashat), past Areni and through Yeghegnadzor, then turns off near Vayk onto the mountain road to Jermuk. It is about 170 km and takes roughly 3 hours, longer with stops. A comfortable plan is to leave Yerevan in the morning, stop at Khor Virap and Noravank, and arrive at Jermuk in the afternoon.

What to Do in Jermuk With a Car
Distances inside Jermuk are small, so once you arrive the car mostly sits in the hotel car park. Choose a hotel with parking, and use the car for the side trips, not the town.
When to Go: Seasons on the Jermuk Road
| Season | What to expect | Driving notes |

| Late May–June | Waterfall at its strongest, fresh green | Fine for any car on the main road |
| July–August | Cool mountain air while Yerevan is hot | Busiest season; book a car early |

| November–April | Snow, ski season, spa breaks | Winter tyres or all-wheel drive recommended; roads can be icy |
Where to Pick Up a Car for Jermuk
Most travellers collect the car at Zvartnots Airport (EVN) or in Yerevan, where the choice is widest, and drive south via Areni. We cannot promise a specific office in Jermuk or Vayk: use the "Specify location" option in the search to see which providers list pick-up or delivery for your dates. If you plan to continue to Sisian or Goris, ask about a different return location and any fee. Keep the manager's phone number from the voucher and tell the provider your flight number if you land at night.
Car, Price and Insurance
Prices vary by city and season and are usually in the same range as Yerevan, where we saw compact automatic sedans from about $33 per day, crossovers from about $47 per day, and full coverage at roughly $8–$9 per day extra. A compact sedan is fine for the M2 and the road to Jermuk in summer; a crossover or an all-wheel-drive car is more comfortable in the shoulder seasons and winter. Compare the total with full coverage, which usually removes the deposit; tyres, glass, the underbody and unpaved roads are normally excluded.
Road Notes for the Jermuk Drive
- Fuel: fill up in Yeghegnadzor or Vayk; there are few stations after the turn-off
- Altitude and weather: at 2,000 m, fog and cold nights are normal even in summer; in winter the road can have ice and snow
- Curves: the last stretch is winding with tight bends; keep to your side and do not overtake blindly
- Parking: small; leave the car at the hotel and walk to the gallery and waterfall
- Unpaved roads: insurance is not valid on dirt tracks, including many forest and lake roads
The borders with Turkey and Azerbaijan are closed; the Jermuk road is well away from the border, but check your own foreign-ministry advice for Syunik and Vayots Dzor if you continue south.
