📍 Kapan, Syunik Province: the provincial capital in the Voghji valley, on the M2 highway about 70 km south of Goris and roughly 80 km from the Iranian border.
Kapan: Syunik's Warm, Green Southern Capital
Kapan lies far lower than the rest of the province — roughly 750–1,050 m — so it is warmer and greener than Goris, with hot summers and a long, mild autumn. It is a working mining and administrative town rather than a polished tourist resort, which is part of its charm: you get real mountain scenery, local cafés and very few crowds. The slopes above the town climb quickly to Khustup, and the valley is lined with forest that turns gold in October.
The town is also historic: in the early 18th century the Armenian leader David Bek used the fortress of Halidzor, near here, as a base against foreign rule.
Getting to Kapan: The Long Road From Yerevan
Kapan is about 320 km from Yerevan, a drive of roughly 5.5–6 hours without stops. The route is the M2: Ararat valley, Areni and Yeghegnadzor, the Vorotan Pass (above 2,300 m), Sisian and Goris, then south through Halidzor to Kapan. The Goris–Kapan stretch has been improved in recent years, but expect curves, trucks and the occasional pothole.
Plan it in two parts. We recommend an overnight in Goris or Sisian rather than one 6-hour push. You will see Noravank, the Sisian stone circle or Tatev on the way and arrive in Kapan fresh.
If you want to start in Kapan itself, open the search above and use the "Specify location" option to see which local providers list pick-up or delivery there for your dates; we cannot promise a specific office. If you collect in Yerevan and leave the car in the south, ask about a different return location and any fee.
What to See Around Kapan by Car
Kapan to Meghri: the Southern Mountain Road
South of Kapan the M2 climbs through the town of Kajaran and over a high pass before dropping to Meghri, where you leave the cool plateau for a Mediterranean-like climate. It is a spectacular drive with many hairpin bends, and one that is worth doing in daylight. The road is generally paved, but weather can change at the top, and snow is possible from about November to April. Meghri sits close to the Iranian border; Iran is the only open land border in the south, and rental cars normally cannot be taken abroad, so do not plan a crossing.
Pick-Up Logic: Yerevan, Kapan or Both?
| Plan | Good for | Remember |
|---|---|---|
| Collect in Yerevan, drive south | Widest choice, automatic crossovers | A 5.5–6 hr first leg; plan an overnight in Goris or Sisian |
| Local pick-up in Kapan, if listed | Shorter stays in the south | Smaller choice; check the car class, gearbox and the contact in the voucher |
| Different return city | One-way trips | Ask the provider about the fee before you book |
Which Car and What Will It Cost?
Prices and availability vary by city and season and are usually in the same range as Yerevan, where we saw compact automatic sedans from about $33 per day and crossovers from about $47 per day, with full coverage adding roughly $8–$9 per day. For Kapan we recommend a crossover or an SUV if the budget allows: you will cover long distances on bumpy mountain roads and want ground clearance and a stable ride. Check the total with full coverage, because the add-on removes most of the excess and often the deposit; tyres, glass, the underbody and unpaved roads are normally excluded. Use the "No deposit" and "No credit card" filters if you prefer not to block money on a card.
Road Notes for Kapan and the South
- Fuel: fill up in Goris or Kapan before mountain stretches; distances between stations can be long
- Winter: from roughly November to March the Vorotan Pass and the road to Meghri can be icy or snowy; carry winter tyres or all-wheel drive
- Heat: summers in the Kapan valley are hot — carry water and avoid leaving valuables or electronics in a parked car
- Daylight: plan long drives so you arrive before dark; curves are tight and not well lit
- Unpaved tracks: insurance is not valid on unpaved roads, including many routes towards Khustup and into reserves
The borders with Turkey and Azerbaijan are closed, and several governments advise caution in some border districts of Syunik. Check your own foreign-ministry travel advice and stick to the main roads.
